The Skyscraper Fans Have it: One World Trade Center is the Best New Skyscraper (And Other Great Skyscrapers of 2014)

Over at SkyscraperCity, every year we look back at the end of it to see what new skyscrapers we have welcomed, and then we decide which one we like best. 2014 was an exceptionally good year to do that. It produced 11 new supertalls (skyscrapers over 300 meters in height) and 224 over 150 meters. Indeed plenty to chose from.

What we usually do is line up the tallest ones (it’s a skyscraper forum after all) and have the members filling in the remaining blanks through a nomination round. This year the contestants were grouped by supertallness and by location so we have a few tournaments within the tournament. The strong development of skyscrapers in cities like Toronto, London, Melbourne and Istanbul is reflected by these having their own little one on one within the bracket. Here are some of the 2014 trophies we were able to give away!

best of Istanbul
Soyak Kristal Kule
best of the Middle East
Al Jawhara Tower, Jeddah
best of Africa
Port Center, Cape Town
best of South America

best of Europe / Global Runner Up

And off course the most popular new skyscraper of 2014 is:

I daresay One World Trade Center is architecturally perhaps not the most interesting new skyscraper. The pole on top is really just vanity height. But it has the best story. It’s got drama, symbolism. It’s New York City. It’s got all the attention. It had to win, and according to the fans, it deserved to win. To celebrate, here is an amazing two-minute video that shows 11 years of construction.
